Arab Access and Experience Index

The index ranges from 66.2 (Tunisia) to 46.7 (Iraq) around a regional mean of 54.2. The spread between states, 19.5 points, is narrower than the spread between domains within most states, which runs from 16 points (Kuwait) to 56 (Tunisia).

Samples are not representative: scores describe respondents, not national populations. Comparisons are indicative and small differences carry no weight. See Data and methods.

How the index is built

The Arab Access and Experience Index is built in five steps from the survey answers, following the method in Data and methods.

1

188 items

120 on access and 68 on experience, across eleven domains.

2

Rescaled 0 to 100

Each item in the direction of access or positive experience. Missing answers are not imputed.

3

Respondent scores

Each measure is the mean of the items a respondent answered.

4

Domain score

For each state, the mean of its access and experience measures.

5

The index

The unweighted mean of the eleven domain scores.

Watch a state’s index assemble

Each column is a domain score: the mean of access (blue) and experience (cyan). The index is their average line.

Decomposition of the index relative to the regional mean

The figure decomposes the difference between a state’s index and the regional mean into the contributions of the eleven domains. Since the index is the unweighted mean of the domain scores, each contribution equals the difference between the state’s score in a domain and the regional mean for that domain, divided by eleven; the contributions therefore sum to the total difference. A positive contribution identifies a domain that places the state above the regional mean, and a negative contribution a domain that places it below.

Country comparison

The comparison decomposes the difference between the indices of two selected states by domain. Each bar reports the difference between the two domain scores divided by eleven; the bars sum to the difference between the two indices.

Note. Access–experience gap = access minus experience. Positive: access exceeds experience. Negative: experience exceeds access.
